Maternity Care Improved, But Key Safety Gaps Remain
4 Sep
Summary
- Maternity services saw an upgraded rating but still face safety concerns.
- Leaky and mouldy clinical areas require improvement from hospital bosses.
- The hospital's maternity services were previously rated inadequate in 2023.

Inspectors have noted improvements in Musgrove Park Hospital's maternity services, upgrading its rating. Despite this progress, health authorities have directed hospital management to address critical issues concerning patient safeguarding and the dilapidated state of clinical areas, which suffer from leaks and mould.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) conducted an inspection in February, finding that the hospital had made strides since its previous 'inadequate' rating in 2023. This positive shift occurred even as the hospital managed the added pressure of the temporary closure of the Yeovil maternity unit in 2025.
However, the CQC emphasized that "important safety concerns remained" despite the overall upgrade. A representative from Somerset NHS Foundation Trust acknowledged the extensive work undertaken by the team and committed to further improvements based on the CQC's findings.
