Monsoon Illnesses Surge in Mumbai: Cases Double!

In July, Mumbai recorded a sharp increase in monsoon-related illnesses, with cases of malaria, leptospirosis, and Covid-19 more than doubling compared to the previous month. Dengue, gastroenteritis, and H1N1 (swine flu) also showed significant rises. Health officials attribute this trend to the monsoon season, which creates optimal breeding conditions for mosquitoes and other disease vectors approximately two weeks after heavy rainfall.

Medical professionals confirmed the surge in vector-borne diseases and viral infections, with symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting being common. While hospitalizations have decreased due to timely treatment, health experts advise early diagnosis for even mild symptoms. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has escalated its efforts to control these diseases.

BMC teams conducted extensive household surveys, reaching millions of residents and collecting numerous blood samples. Preventive treatments for leptospirosis were administered to thousands. To curb mosquito breeding, civic authorities inspected numerous potential sites, identifying and eliminating thousands of breeding spots, including discarded tires and scrap materials. Extensive fogging operations were also carried out across the city.
