Mumbai Faces Diabetes Crisis: 15.6% Pre-Diabetic, Half Undiagnosed

On the eve of World Diabetes Day, new data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) paints a troubling picture of the diabetes crisis unfolding in Mumbai. According to a BMC survey conducted as part of the Salt-Sugar Campaign 2025, a staggering 15.6% of the 5,000 respondents were found to be pre-diabetic.
The situation is further compounded by the fact that medical experts estimate around half of those living with diabetes remain undiagnosed until they develop complications. This lack of early detection is exacerbated by a concerning lack of awareness, with the survey revealing that only 27% of respondents were aware of the health dangers linked to excessive sugar consumption.
To address this growing challenge, the BMC has been actively screening residents and providing dietary counseling. Over the last three years, municipal health institutions have screened 5,59,751 people for diabetes and hypertension. Additionally, the BMC's Healthy Campus Initiative, launched across over 100 city colleges, aims to educate young people on healthy diet and lifestyle practices.
