After initial treatment in Hyderabad showed little improvement, the patient was transferred to Mumbai. There, a specialized phrenic nerve stimulation surgery was performed. This advanced procedure targets the nerve responsible for diaphragm activation, bypassing the spinal cord injury.
Within weeks of the surgery, the patient began breathing on his own, significantly improving his quality of life. While still paralyzed, he can now speak and even sing. This procedure is reportedly Mumbai's first of its kind for restoring independent breathing in such severe spinal cord injuries, marking a significant development in neuro-rehabilitation in India.
