Invisible Addiction: Mum Warns Over Alcohol Apps
17 Jul
Summary
- Carla ordered 18 bottles of wine in the week before her death.
- Alcohol delivery apps made addiction 'invisible' for a dying daughter.
- A mother urges safeguards for vulnerable individuals ordering alcohol.

A grieving mother has spoken out about the devastating impact of alcohol delivery apps, which she believes enabled her daughter Carla's fatal addiction.
Carla, who died at 38 from cirrhosis, ordered 18 bottles of wine in the week before her passing. Her mother, Teri, shared that Carla could order large amounts of alcohol to her home, even when too ill to walk to shops.
Teri expressed shock upon learning about Carla's advanced cirrhosis five months before her death. She offered extensive support, including financial aid for rehabilitation, but Carla's drinking continued, leading to her eventual demise.
Carla's social drinking escalated following a miscarriage and a difficult breakup. Her condition worsened, with Teri finding entire recycling bins filled with wine bottles weekly, indicating a severe dependency that prevented her from visiting stores.
Teri was on holiday when Carla was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Although Carla had previously claimed to be ill with a bug, Teri sensed something was wrong. After arriving at the hospital, Teri learned Carla's cirrhosis was too advanced for treatment.
Following her daughter's death in December 2023, Teri has initiated a petition. She seeks a review of alcohol home delivery services and stronger protections for vulnerable adults, aiming to prevent other families from experiencing such profound loss.
