Cowboys Mud Racing offers an unconventional therapeutic approach, using all-terrain vehicles to support men struggling with mental health issues. The organization, which began in June, encourages men to connect with others and build confidence through outdoor activities.
President Ryan Ward, drawing from his own experiences with PTSD, suicidal thoughts, and ADHD, founded the group. After a severe brain injury, Ward found recovery through basic rehabilitation and the support of a father figure, inspiring him to help others.
The group, with 13 members in Manitoba and a chapter of five in Alberta, emphasizes brotherhood and camaraderie. Typical rides involve navigating challenging terrains, where members are supported to overcome fear and find peace in nature.
Brian Brown, a co-founder, highlights how the activity serves as a helpful distraction, allowing individuals to open up and release problems. This aligns with Jessica Smith of Thrive Community Support Circle's view that such groups normalize life's ups and downs and provide healthy emotional outlets.
Cowboys Mud Racing is actively supporting Thrive by donating proceeds from merchandise sales. The founders hope to expand the organization nationwide and eventually into the United States, addressing the often-unspoken challenges of men's mental health.
