Mpox Strikes Guinea-Bissau: Children Most at Risk

Guinea-Bissau has declared an mpox outbreak, with reports indicating that more than half of the 46 suspected cases are children. The epidemic was announced on July 4, following the nation's first confirmed mpox case in a 27-year-old woman. Authorities are concerned that weak health surveillance systems are allowing the virus to spread undetected, particularly affecting young children, with 16 cases involving those under four years old.

Unicef has expressed alarm over the potential for a wider, undetected spread due to the country's fragile health infrastructure. This marks the first time mpox has been reported in Guinea-Bissau, making even a small outbreak a significant public health concern. The current cases are genetically consistent with variants circulating in neighboring nations, suggesting a persistent risk of cross-border transmission in the region.

Health experts emphasize the urgent need to strengthen surveillance and bolster frontline health worker capacity to address the outbreak effectively. With primary schools scheduled to reopen in September, community health workers, supported by international agencies, are conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns. This grassroots effort aims to build public trust amidst the ongoing health crisis and infrastructural challenges.

The country faces additional hurdles, including infrastructure issues and political instability following the suspension of presidential elections.
