Mpox Alert: Spain Sees Surge in Infectious Strain
3 Mar
Summary
- Spain has confirmed 84 mpox cases, with 36 of the highly transmissible Ib strain.
- The Ib strain spreads more easily than the 2022 global outbreak variant.
- Travellers are urged to take extra precautions due to increased infections.

As of February 18, 2026, Spain has reported 84 mpox cases, with 36 identified as the more infectious MPXV clade Ib strain. This strain is thought to transmit more readily than the variant responsible for the 2022 global outbreak, leading health officials to advise travelers to Spain to take additional precautions.
Mpox symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, and a rash with painful sores, appear five to 21 days after exposure. Young children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals are at higher risk for severe illness. While Spain has the highest number of cases in the EU/EEA, other countries have also reported imported cases.
Preventative measures include vaccination, good hygiene, and avoiding close contact with infected individuals. Travelers are also advised against contact with wild animals, to discuss sexual health with partners, and to avoid sharing personal items like bedding and towels. The UKHSA confirmed its first clade Ib case in October 2024, with 25 cases identified by January 31, 2026, mostly linked to travel.
