MP Doctors Strike: Routine Care Halted
9 Mar
Summary
- Around 8,000 junior doctors in Madhya Pradesh are on strike.
- The strike has stopped routine services, but emergency care continues.
- Doctors demand stipend revision from April 2025 and pending arrears.

Nearly 8,000 junior doctors across Madhya Pradesh commenced a strike on Monday, disrupting routine healthcare services in government medical colleges. The action stems from the government's failure to implement a promised stipend revision, which was slated for April 2025. This has led to the halt of outpatient consultations and elective surgeries in major cities including Bhopal, Indore, and Jabalpur.
Resident doctors, senior residents, and interns are participating in the strike, emphasizing their crucial role in hospital operations. They are demanding the fulfillment of the government order for stipend increases and the payment of arrears from April 2025. Despite the disruption to non-emergency services, doctors assure that emergency and critical care will not be compromised.
The strike follows a period of symbolic protests and repeated, unfulfilled government assurances. The Junior Doctors Association stated that the current agitation escalated after a year of waiting for action on the revised stipends, initially promised after a 2021 strike. Talks are underway with state officials, including the Commissioner of Medical Education, and a meeting with the Deputy Chief Minister is scheduled.
