A man from Colorado whose life was saved by a kidney transplant is now using cinema to help others find donors. Ricky Hernandez was diagnosed with kidney disease despite living an active lifestyle, a diagnosis that brought immense mental and emotional challenges.
His search for a donor took an unexpected turn when his employer, National CineMedia (NCM), featured his story in advertisements. These ads appeared on more than 17,000 movie screens across major U.S. theater chains, leading to over 300 applications and a life-saving match.
Inspired by his experience, Hernandez partnered with Kidneys for Communities founder Atul Agnihotri. They aim to connect potential living donors with patients in need by utilizing cinema advertising. This initiative capitalizes on the captive, phone-free audience in theaters to raise awareness for kidney donation.
Living donor transplants offer significant benefits, including longer-lasting kidneys compared to those from deceased donors. Denver is set to host the 2026 Transplant Games, bringing together donors, recipients, and their families.
