Early Mounjaro Use Boosts Diabetes Control
30 May
Summary
- Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) outperformed other drugs in Type 2 diabetes.
- Autoantibodies may cause long COVID neurological symptoms.
- Blood donation policies may change due to long COVID autoantibodies.

Recently diagnosed Type 2 diabetes patients not adequately controlled by standard care demonstrated superior outcomes when Eli Lilly's tirzepatide (Mounjaro) was added. The SURPASS-EARLY trial found tirzepatide led to greater improvements in hemoglobin A1c, weight, and waist circumference over two years compared to other GLP-1 drugs.
Approximately 60% of patients on tirzepatide achieved normal blood sugar levels, significantly more than the 24% in the control group. Researchers suggest earlier use of tirzepatide could provide more sustained metabolic benefits.
In separate findings, two studies indicate that neurological symptoms of long COVID may result from the body's own autoantibodies attacking itself. Infusing these autoantibodies into mice mimicked long COVID's neurological features, including fatigue and balance loss.
This research may pave the way for targeted autoimmunity treatments for millions suffering from long COVID. It also raises concerns for blood donation policies, as plasma from individuals with long COVID autoantibodies could pose risks to recipients.
