Mounjaro Pens to Shrink: Fights 'Golden Dose' Cheating
5 Mar
Summary
- Manufacturer to reduce liquid in Mounjaro pens from April.
- This change prevents patients from extracting a fifth dose.
- New pens ensure four doses are administered safely.

Starting in April, Mounjaro pens will be redesigned to contain less residual liquid, aiming to curb the practice of patients extracting an extra, or 'golden,' fifth dose. Manufacturer Eli Lilly is implementing this change with a redesigned Kwikpen injector to prevent users from administering more than the prescribed four doses. This modification addresses a safety concern, as attempting to extract surplus fluid or expose the medicine to air increases the risk of infection and harmful side effects.
The Mounjaro KwikPen will still provide four full doses, and its price will remain unchanged, ranging from £130 to £300 depending on the strength. The company stated that the new injector design will make it easier to track administered doses and ensure the pen is ready for disposal after the fourth dose. This change will become widespread once current stocks held by pharmacies are depleted.
