Mouldy Maternity Ward Sparks Mum's Fears
16 Mar
Summary
- Expectant mother concerned over mould and low midwife numbers.
- Maternity ward rated 'inadequate' due to insufficient staffing.
- Hospital claims staffing meets national guidelines despite concerns.

A pregnant woman, Tamara Hale, is due to give birth via caesarean section at Musgrove Park Hospital and has voiced serious concerns regarding the facility's conditions and staffing. She and her partner, Callum Brunsdon, observed mould on the maternity ward walls and were informed of critically low numbers of midwives on duty, with only two staff overseeing 16 women overnight.
These observations follow a 2023 inspection by the Care Quality Commission, which rated the ward as 'inadequate,' citing concerns about ensuring patient safety due to insufficient midwifery staff. Mr. Brunsdon described the hospital environment as 'shambolic' and expressed worries about the health impact of mould on mothers and newborns.
Despite these criticisms, hospital administrators assert that their maternity staffing levels meet national guidelines. They indicated that staffing had been increased following temporary closures at Yeovil District Hospital. The hospital trust also stated that significant improvements have been made since the 2023 inspection, including enhanced governance, updated policies, and new equipment.
