Monty Don has shared details of a frightening health episode that led him to confront his own mortality. The Gardeners' World presenter experienced a transient ischaemic attack (TIA), or mini-stroke, which necessitated a temporary absence from his television duties. This health scare, occurring in 2008, resulted in a significant realization for Don.

He described the TIA as a moment where he truly understood that death is inevitable. This experience underscored for him the timeless wisdom that love, family, and friendships are paramount, far outweighing pursuits of fame or financial wealth. He stated that no one on their deathbed wishes for greater fame.

The episode began with an unusual sensation, which was later diagnosed as a TIA, a warning sign of increased stroke risk. While initially dismissing the feeling, medical advice confirmed the seriousness of the event, which can potentially lead to permanent disability. Don recalled experiencing stroke-like symptoms such as dizziness and a feeling of impending death, seeking comfort in his wife's arms.
