Monash IVF Admits Major Embryo Transfer Errors
7 Mar
Summary
- An IVF clinic error resulted in a woman giving birth to a stranger's baby.
- Another woman was implanted with the wrong embryo in a separate incident.
- Both families affected by these serious errors received large secret settlements.

Monash IVF has publicly acknowledged two serious blunders concerning embryo transfers. The first incident, discovered in February of last year, involved an embryo transfer error at its Brisbane facility approximately one year prior. This error led to a Queensland woman unknowingly giving birth to a baby that was not genetically hers.
In a separate case, a different woman received the wrong embryo during a procedure at a Melbourne clinic in June. Although this woman was implanted with her own embryo, the couple intended to use reciprocal IVF, a process for same-sex couples where one partner carries the other's egg. Both families involved in these incidents have reportedly received large, undisclosed settlements from Monash IVF.
