- Screening events have identified serious cardiac issues in young people.

Sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) tragically claimed the life of 25-year-old Ryan Carter in 2019. His mother, Sue Carter, describes his death as sudden and unexpected, with no prior symptoms, highlighting the devastating nature of SADS which affects around 500 people in the UK each year. A post-mortem revealed no cause, leaving his family with no answers.
Driven by her loss, Ms. Carter has dedicated herself to preventing similar tragedies by raising funds for heart screenings for young people. To date, she has successfully raised £25,000, with a recent screening event identifying several individuals with major cardiac issues. Six people received hospital referrals for treatment, and 23 were advised to see a GP, demonstrating the vital importance of early detection.
Ms. Carter urges individuals aged 14 to 35 in the Totton area to participate in upcoming screening events, emphasizing that early detection through screening can prevent fatal outcomes. The Totton Running Club's annual fundraiser also honors her son's memory, contributing to the ongoing fight against cardiac risk in the young.
