Pharmaceutical company Moderna has seen its stock prices rise significantly following the announcement of its preliminary research into hantavirus vaccines. This research reportedly commenced before the recent hantavirus outbreak that garnered public attention.
The outbreak, confirmed as the Andes variant of hantavirus, occurred aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. Health officials have reported at least seven cases and three fatalities linked to this specific outbreak, though they maintain the overall risk to the public remains extremely low.
Hantavirus symptoms can manifest between four and 42 days after exposure, including fatigue, fever, muscle aches, headaches, and dizziness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that approximately 38 percent of patients who develop respiratory symptoms could succumb to the disease.
The MV Hondius cruise ship docked off the Spanish island of Tenerife, with most passengers and crew having returned home. The ship was carrying 17 Americans, one of whom tested mildly positive for the Andes virus. This individual, along with another passenger showing mild symptoms, will be transported to specialized treatment centers in Omaha, Nebraska, for assessment and care.
