Summary
- A mobile lung screening unit detected over 25 cancers in its first year.
- The unit offers 'lung MOTs' to current or former smokers aged 55-74.
- NHS aims for 75% of cancers diagnosed at early stages by 2030.

A pioneering mobile lung screening unit has achieved significant success in its inaugural year, diagnosing over 25 cancers. This initiative, known as "lung MOTs," targets current and former smokers aged between 55 and 74, offering them a vital opportunity for early cancer detection.
The mobile unit, strategically located for accessibility, provides in-depth CT scans described as significantly more detailed than standard chest X-rays. This technology allows healthcare professionals to identify tiny nodules, which, while often benign, are the starting point for all lung cancers.
Across the Somerset, Wiltshire, Avon, and Gloucestershire region, the program has screened over 40,000 individuals, leading to the discovery of nearly 450 previously unknown lung cancers. The NHS plans to expand these mobile units nationwide by 2030, aiming to increase early-stage diagnoses to 75% and improve treatment outcomes.
