Kaiser Funds Vital ER Expansion for Overcrowded MLK Hospital
12 Aug
Summary
- Kaiser Permanente commits $32 million to expand MLK Community Hospital's ER.
- Hospital's ER capacity is exceeded fivefold, serving 125,000 visits annually.
- Funding includes a $25 million grant and a modular building for temporary space.

Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital in Willowbrook is set to receive a substantial boost for its overburdened emergency department. Kaiser Permanente has pledged up to $32 million to facilitate a critical expansion of the hospital's Hope Emergency Center.
The emergency department was originally designed to accommodate around 25,000 annual visits but is currently managing approximately 125,000. This immense demand has necessitated the use of field tents in the hospital parking lot for patient care.
Kaiser Permanente's contribution includes a $25 million charitable grant and a $7 million modular building. This temporary facility will provide essential space for emergency services while the permanent expansion and long-term improvements are underway.
Approximately 80% of MLK Community Hospital's patients are covered by Medi-Cal, with nearly 95% of emergency department visits involving patients with Medi-Cal, Medicare, or those who are uninsured. The funding is seen as vital support for the community's healthcare infrastructure.
This announcement coincides with a review by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors concerning the distribution of revenue from Measure B, a parcel tax intended for trauma hospitals and emergency medical services. MLK Community Hospital, a non-trauma facility, has historically received a portion of excess Measure B funds.
