Summary

- Codeine syrup abuse is rising, especially among young people.
- Government to take strict action against misuse of drug licenses.
Health Minister Lalrinpuii of Mizoram announced on Tuesday that the government will not hesitate to revoke drug licenses for dealers who break the law. This strong stance follows an inter-ministerial meeting on Monday addressing the alarming rise in pharmaceutical drug abuse within the state. The meeting highlighted that a decline in heroin supply has led many to turn to pharmaceutical drugs, with codeine syrup identified as the most abused.
Discussions at the meeting also covered seizures of misused drugs and arrests of individuals, including licensed dealers, involved in irregularities. The minister expressed concern over the widespread availability of codeine syrup without prescriptions, impacting genuine patients while fueling illegal sales. She indicated that alleged involvement of some dealers and individuals posing as medical representatives is being investigated, with measures to replace labels on drug bottles also noted.
