Mother's Fight Saves Lives After Daughter's Suicide

A Minnesota mother has spearheaded significant legislative changes aimed at preventing suicide, inspired by the loss of her daughter, Kayla Gaebel. Nearly two years after Gaebel's death in 2023, her mother, MJ Weiss Blair, successfully advocated for "Kayla's Hope Act." This new law mandates that the Minnesota Department of Transportation analyze bridges for suicide prevention measures, a crucial step as there was no prior enforcement requiring such analysis.

This legislative success follows an earlier achievement where $8 million was secured to install permanent prevention barriers on the bridge that tragically claimed Gaebel's life. The recently signed bill expands this initiative, impacting how all future bridges in Minnesota will be designed by architects. Weiss Blair continues her advocacy, now planning to champion the Act on a federal level as a model for other states.
