MIND Diet: Your Key to a Sharper Brain
8 Mar
Summary
- MIND diet, combining Mediterranean and DASH, significantly cuts Alzheimer's risk.
- Improvements in diet adherence over time showed greater dementia risk reduction.
- Never too late to adopt a healthy diet for dementia prevention at any age.

New research suggests that adopting the MIND diet, an eating pattern that combines elements of the Mediterranean and DASH diets, can significantly lower the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. This dietary approach, designed to protect brain health, emphasizes specific food groups known for their neuroprotective qualities.
The study, analyzing data from over 90,000 American adults, found that individuals over 45 who adhered to the MIND diet experienced a reduced risk of dementia. Notably, those who improved their adherence to the diet over time demonstrated the most substantial risk reduction, suggesting that dietary changes can be beneficial at any life stage.
Scientists presented these findings at a recent meeting in Orlando, Florida. The MIND diet, developed to slow cognitive decline, focuses on 10 brain-healthy foods and limits unhealthy ones. Its flexibility means that even moderate adoption can yield significant benefits in protecting brain function as individuals age.
