Statins Now Recommended for Over Half of US Adults
21 Jul
Summary
- Nearly 57% of US adults aged 30-79 are eligible for statins.
- This includes 21.5 million people newly eligible under updated guidelines.
- New guidelines consider a longer 30-year risk horizon for patients.

New recommendations from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology now advise that nearly 57% of U.S. adults aged 30 to 79 should be taking statin drugs. This translates to approximately 87.5 million individuals, a substantial increase that includes 21.5 million people newly eligible under these updated guidelines issued in March.
The revised guidelines adopt an updated heart risk calculator and extend the risk assessment period from 10 to 30 years. This means individuals are now being considered for statin therapy based on their long-term cardiovascular disease risk, even if their immediate risk is low.
Age remains a critical factor, with statin recommendations increasing from 11% for those in their 30s to 85% for those in their 60s and 94% for those in their 70s. Doctors emphasize that decisions about statin use are preference-based and should involve discussions about risks, benefits, costs, and patient preferences, alongside lifestyle modifications.
