Midwife Hearing: Baby Died 27 Mins After Birth
2 Jul
Summary
- Midwives face fitness to practise hearing after a baby died shortly after birth.
- An inquest previously found gross failures contributed to the baby's death.
- The mother testified that basic care was not provided.
A fitness to practise hearing has commenced for two midwives, Ruksana Bibi and Yasmin Karolia, concerning the care of a mother whose baby died 27 minutes after birth. Fiona Winser-Ramm and Dan Ramm's daughter, Aliona, tragically passed away at Leeds General Infirmary on January 1, 2020.
A 2023 inquest previously concluded that "a number of gross failures of the most basic nature" directly contributed to Aliona's death. The mother, Fiona Winser-Ramm, shared her emotional testimony, stating that "an inch of my life hasn't been destroyed" since her daughter's death and that they did not receive even the "absolute basics of care."
Winser-Ramm recounted contacting a midwife due to a concerning discharge, but felt her concerns were not met with appropriate urgency or explanation. She later had to insist on coming to the hospital for an assessment. Once admitted, her baby's heart rate was flagged as pathological on a cardiotocograph (CTG).
The parents were among those who successfully campaigned for an independent inquiry into repeated failures at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust's maternity units. The Trust has stated it is implementing significant improvements, while the mother emphasized that her daughter should be remembered as their "perfect daughter," not merely a case statistic.
