Seniors Without AC: Middlechurch Home Faces Heat Crisis
16 Jul
Summary
- Middlechurch care home residents suffered without air conditioning during a heat wave.
- Portable and industrial air conditioning units were deployed to alleviate heat.
- Essential parts for the main AC system were delayed, extending repair timelines.
Residents at Middlechurch care home in West St. Paul experienced significant discomfort as the facility struggled with air conditioning issues during a recent heat wave. Sherry Shindruk, daughter of a resident, reported that her father was "barely" coping with the high temperatures last weekend.
Conditions began to improve earlier this week as multiple large, industrial portable air conditioning units were brought in. Shindruk observed these units in common areas and noted that individual portable AC units were being installed in residents' rooms. While noisy, these units provided immediate cooling, bringing her father's room temperature down from 28 C to a more comfortable 26 C.
The home's main HVAC system repair was delayed because essential parts needed to be ordered from outside the province. Initially expected mid-week, one resident's family member was informed the part might not arrive for installation that week. Similar AC issues were also reported at two other Winnipeg Regional Health Authority care homes, Pembina Place and Donwood Manor, which also received temporary cooling solutions.
