Microplastics Linked to Heart Attacks: New Study

A recent study published in the European Heart Journal has uncovered a potential link between microplastic particles and serious heart problems. Researchers discovered that 84% of individuals who had experienced a major heart attack had micro- and nanoplastics in their blood. This is significantly higher than the percentages found in patients with other heart conditions or normal arteries.
The study, led by Professor Emanuele Barbato from Sapienza University of Rome, identified polyethylene, a common plastic in packaging, as the most abundant type found in patients' arteries. While this research does not definitively prove that plastics cause heart attacks, it indicates a strong correlation between environmental exposure to these particles and cardiovascular disease.
Factors such as smoking and exposure to air pollution were associated with higher concentrations of these plastic particles. This suggests that environmental conditions, beyond just ingestion from food packaging, may contribute to the presence of microplastics in the body and potentially impact cardiovascular health on a global scale.
