Summary
- Micronutrients significantly reduce severe irritability in teenagers.
- Improvements were greatest in teens with disruptive behavior.
- Lower socioeconomic teens showed greater benefits from supplementation.

A groundbreaking clinical trial reveals that broad-spectrum micronutrients can significantly reduce severe irritability in teenagers, marking a potential breakthrough in adolescent mental health treatment. The study, conducted over eight weeks, demonstrated that daily vitamin and mineral supplementation outperformed placebo in improving irritability, emotional reactivity, and overall well-being.
The most dramatic improvements were observed in teenagers diagnosed with disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD), where a substantial majority responded positively to micronutrients. Parents also reported enhanced conduct and prosocial behaviors in teens receiving the supplements.
Notably, the intervention showed particular promise for adolescents from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, who experienced greater benefits. This finding highlights the potential of micronutrients to address underlying nutritional vulnerabilities and reduce health disparities.
Furthermore, the study indicated a positive impact on suicidal ideation and self-harm behaviors, with greater decreases seen in the micronutrient group. While mild gastrointestinal side effects like diarrhea were more common, they were generally temporary and manageable.
