Michigan Cyclospora Outbreak Surges: Over 11,500 Cases Reported

Michigan has reported a substantial surge in cyclosporiasis cases, with the state's Department of Health and Human Services documenting over 11,500 cases as of August 4, 2026. This figure represents a significant escalation from the typical annual count of approximately 50 cases.

As of July 30, 193 Michigan residents had been hospitalized due to the intestinal ailment. While two deaths were reported, state officials noted these individuals had significant underlying health conditions. The outbreak, which began tracking on June 22, has spread to 70 counties, with Southeast Michigan experiencing the highest incidence.

Investigations have identified lettuce or salad greens as a potential source, though other foods have not been ruled out. A lettuce supplier to Taco Bell was linked to some cases, leading to a voluntary recall of iceberg lettuce from central Mexico. Multiple clusters of the illness are active across the United States.

Canadian health officials in Windsor-Essex, Ontario, are urging precautions for travel to Michigan due to a notable increase in cyclosporiasis cases there. This region has seen 24 cases as of July 31, far exceeding its typical annual average of three. Travel to Michigan was identified as a common factor among those affected.
