Michigan Battles Bird Flu Outbreak: 5 New Cases Confirmed Across the State

As of November 13, 2025, Michigan officials have reported 5 new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza, or bird flu, across the state. This includes the first confirmed case in St. Clair County, as well as 3 previous cases in backyard flocks in Monroe County.

The other 3 cases cited in the report involve commercial poultry flocks in Ottawa County. These additional cases bring Ottawa County's total to 15 cases in commercial poultry operations and 2 in dairy herds since the bird flu was first detected in Michigan earlier this year.

The highly contagious virus that causes bird flu has been spreading among both domestic and wild animals. While the risk to human health is considered low, state officials are urging poultry farmers and backyard flock owners to follow strict cleaning and disinfection protocols when working with their birds. They also advise the public to properly handle and cook poultry and eggs before consumption.

The outbreak has contributed to supply chain disruptions and higher prices for chicken and eggs. Authorities emphasize the importance of securing poultry feed from wild animals to prevent further spread of the virus.
