Mhow Water Contamination Sickens Dozens

In Mhow tehsil, Indore district, Madhya Pradesh, around 25 residents have fallen ill after allegedly consuming contaminated drinking water. Medical examinations have confirmed typhoid, liver-related infections, and jaundice in several patients, with others receiving home treatment for less severe symptoms. Health teams are actively engaged in door-to-door visits to identify more cases and distribute essential health advisories.

Residents reported that the illnesses began after consuming turbid, foul-smelling water supplied over the past two weeks, particularly affecting children. Local authorities have collected water samples for laboratory analysis and initiated a formal investigation. Residents have been advised to drink only boiled water, and officials state the situation is currently under control.

Separately, the National Green Tribunal has taken notice of sewage mixing with drinking water in parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, highlighting it as a significant public health concern. Earlier reports indicated a state government study linked 15 deaths to contaminated water consumption in Bhagirathpura. The government has provided ex-gratia assistance of ₹2 lakh to the next-of-kin of 18 individuals, although district authorities maintained that only 10 deaths were directly linked to contaminated water.
