Methuen Maternity Ward Closes Early Amid Nurse Concerns
25 Jun
Summary
- Labor and delivery services at Merrimack Health Methuen Hospital closed early on Monday.
- Patients are now being redirected to Lawrence General Hospital, just two miles away.
- Nurses express concerns about patient safety and hospital capacity at the new facility.

The labor and delivery unit and maternity ward at Merrimack Health Methuen Hospital, formerly Holy Family Hospital, has ceased operations as of Monday, June 29, concluding services a full month earlier than initially announced. Patients needing labor and delivery care after this date are being redirected to Lawrence General Hospital. While emergency labor patients can still present at Methuen, they will be transported to Lawrence General if feasible.
This accelerated closure follows a decision by a working group that evaluated the area's healthcare needs and financial viability. The impacted department comprises 24 obstetric beds, 28 well infant nursery bassinets, and 10 special care nursery bassinets. Merrimack Health acquired Holy Family Hospital in 2024 following the financial difficulties of Steward Health Care, the previous owner.
Nurses at the Methuen facility expressed surprise and concern, having been informed of the earlier closure date in a recent meeting. They highlight apprehension regarding the transition to Lawrence General, questioning its capacity and preparedness, particularly given past situations where Lawrence General reportedly turned away patients due to being full. Some nurses also cited concerns about the treatment of staff during this transition.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health had previously raised objections to the closure, deeming the Methuen location "necessary for preserving access." Merrimack Health is currently responding to the DPH's essential services process. The hospital system states it is prepared to manage the transition safely and care for patients as a regional provider of maternity care.
