Fairness Creams Poisoning Youth With Mercury

In Pune, a concerning trend has emerged with doctors treating over 24 young adults for suspected mercury poisoning linked to fairness creams. Patients, predominantly aged 20-25, have presented with severe symptoms including leg pain, weakness, excessive sweating, and fatigue. Neurological issues and autoimmune disorders have been reported as serious complications from prolonged use of these mercury-laden products.

Investigations revealed that some creams, often originating from Pakistan, contained mercury levels exceeding 15,000, posing significant health risks. The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public alert on July 4, declaring several cosmetic products unsafe and removing them from the market. This regulatory action underscores the dangers of unregulated and counterfeit beauty products.

Authorities seized substantial stocks of prohibited cosmetics, with cases registered under relevant laws. Medical professionals advise immediate discontinuation of suspect creams and seeking medical advice if unexplained health problems arise. Prolonged exposure to mercury can lead to irreversible damage to vital organs like the kidneys and brain.
