From Psychosis to Nursing: Ayla's Triumph
7 Feb
Summary
- Ayla Jones battled psychosis and eating disorders from age 15.
- She overcame years of hospital stays to earn a mental health nursing degree.
- Now she aims to improve mental health support for young people.

Ayla Jones's life took a dramatic turn at 15 when early mental health issues escalated into full-blown psychosis, including delusions and paranoia. Previously a high-achieving student, Ayla developed bulimia as a coping mechanism following family trauma and the transition to secondary school. Her struggles led to repeated hospitalizations and a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type.
Despite significant challenges with medication side effects and a period of isolation, Ayla's resilience shone through. With crucial support from community nurses and projects focused on social skills, she began her recovery journey. This stability allowed her to pursue education, first at Afan College and later at Swansea University.
In September 2021, Ayla began her mental health nursing degree at Swansea University, deferring her studies for a year due to overwhelming challenges. She successfully returned in 2022, graduating in 2026 with a degree in mental health nursing, supported by her wellbeing mentor. Now, Ayla is passionate about advocating for better, more inclusive mental health support within schools for young people. She hopes her experience will inspire and help others navigate their own mental health challenges.
