Summary
- Advocacy program held for rural development staff on mental health.
- Nearly 10.6% of Indian population affected by mental health issues.
- Success stories shared of homeless individuals receiving care.

An advocacy program focused on mental health was recently organized for staff of the District Rural Development Agency. This initiative, a collaboration between M.S. Chellamuthu Trust & Research Foundation and the Rural Development Department, marked the 25th anniversary of the Erwadi fire accident. The accident tragically claimed the lives of many individuals with mental disabilities.
Speakers underscored the critical need to enhance mental health awareness at the grassroots level through rural development efforts. Statistics reveal that approximately 10.6% of India's population experiences mental health disorders. However, all such conditions are treatable, manageable, and preventable with early intervention and prompt psychiatric care.
The program urged officials to foster awareness in villages, combat stigma, and encourage treatment-seeking. It also highlighted the growing issue of addiction among youth and the importance of community support in identifying and referring individuals for help. Inspiring examples were shared of homeless individuals with mental illness who were successfully treated, reunited with families, and rehabilitated through employment.
