A significant portion of patients battling severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are discontinuing their medication, experts warned at a recent workshop in Lucknow. Nearly 50% of these individuals stop treatment, increasing the risk of relapse and irreversible damage to their personality.
Psychiatrists highlighted that the initial onset of these conditions commonly occurs between the ages of 20 and 30. While early diagnosis can lead to shorter treatment and near-normal functioning, stigma and poor medication adherence remain significant obstacles for caregivers and patients.
The discussion also underscored the rising mental health challenges among youth. Approximately 4% of young people exhibit suicidal tendencies, and one in seven adolescents between 10 and 19 years old suffers from a mental disorder. Academic pressure, social media, and relationship complexities are identified as key stressors.
Experts urged caregivers to recognize early warning signs like mood changes, anxiety, and withdrawal, seeking prompt medical help. Ensuring regular medication, follow-up visits, and a supportive environment are vital for recovery and preventing the worsening of these conditions.
