- The family was unaware of a potentially life-saving vaccine.

A mother from Lancashire is campaigning for increased awareness and vaccination against meningitis W after her 18-year-old daughter, Emily Alker, succumbed to the rare strain in the summer of 2017. Emily fell ill on her last day of a celebratory holiday in Crete with friends, initially experiencing headache and chills, with her symptoms being mistaken for heatstroke.
Emily's condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to seizures in the ambulance. Her parents flew to meet her, only to be informed by doctors that her brain had been severely affected. Emily had been accepted to study law at the University of Birmingham.
Since her daughter's death, Beth Alker has advocated for legislative action on booster jabs for individuals over 16. She highlights the critical need for greater public understanding of meningitis symptoms, emphasizing its swift and devastating progression. Beth expressed regret over her lack of knowledge regarding a vaccine that could have protected Emily.
The mother described the nearly nine years since Emily's passing as "unbearable," emphasizing her daughter's absence. Beth also noted the recurring horror when hearing about similar cases, such as recent events at the University of Kent, and stressed that the benefits of vaccination, despite potential costs, far outweigh any financial concerns.
