Meningitis Strikes Reading: Three Cases Linked
15 May
Summary
- Three young people connected via social network diagnosed with meningitis.
- One confirmed case is meningitis B (MenB); further tests are pending.
- Close contacts are being offered precautionary antibiotics.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is responding to three separate meningitis cases linked via a social network among young people in Reading. One confirmed case involves meningitis B (MenB), while results for the other two are pending. Close contacts of all three individuals are being proactively offered antibiotics as a preventative measure.
Dr. Shamez Ladhani from UKHSA described the situation as "evolving" and "really unfortunate" due to the proximity of the outbreaks. He noted that the strain identified in Reading is distinct from those previously seen in Kent and Dorset. The agency confirmed that preventative measures, including antibiotic administration and potential vaccination, are being implemented for identified contacts.
While information has been shared with students and parents at affected schools, the UKHSA maintains that the risk to the broader public remains low. Dr. Ladhani advised concerned families to follow official UKHSA guidance closely, especially regarding the careful management of antibiotic supplies, which could face demand challenges.
