24 Mar
Summary
- A mother is campaigning for schools to identify meningitis warning signs.
- Her 17-year-old son died suddenly from meningitis in November 2024.
- She advocates for wider meningitis B vaccination availability for all ages.

Hayley Ellis, from Shrewsbury, is advocating for enhanced meningitis awareness in schools after losing her 17-year-old son, Michael, in November 2024. Michael had returned home from a work shift complaining of feeling unwell, with his mother initially suspecting a common bug. However, his condition worsened dramatically.
Within 20 minutes of Ellis arriving home, paramedics informed her that Michael's heart had stopped and nothing could be done. She noted he was covered in spots that morning, a symptom she later realized was linked to meningitis. The suddenness of his death has prompted her campaign.
Ellis believes schools should educate older students about recognizing health warning signs and encourage them to report concerns to adults. She also stresses the importance of family awareness of meningitis symptoms. The campaign comes as thousands in Kent received vaccinations following the deaths of two young people from the disease.
Meningitis B is a leading cause of meningococcal meningitis in the UK. Routine vaccinations for this strain were introduced in 2015. Ellis desires more widespread availability of the vaccine, not just for students.
