Summary
- New study links long-term melatonin use to increased heart failure risk.
- Cardiologist cautions against panic, citing study limitations.
- Occasional use likely safe; chronic insomnia is also a heart risk.

A recent study presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2025 has sparked debate regarding the safety of regular melatonin consumption. Preliminary findings suggest a potential link between long-term melatonin use and increased cardiovascular risks among individuals with insomnia.
The research, which analyzed health records of over 130,000 adults, indicated higher rates of heart failure, hospitalizations, and mortality in those using melatonin regularly for at least 12 months compared to a control group. These findings were presented as a preliminary abstract and have not yet undergone full peer review.
Cardiologists advise against immediate panic, noting the study's observational nature and data limitations, such as unrecorded dosages and pre-existing conditions in participants. Chronic insomnia itself is a significant risk factor for heart disease, complicating direct causal links to melatonin.
While occasional melatonin use for issues like jet lag is generally considered safe, prolonged, nightly use warrants re-evaluation. Experts recommend consulting healthcare providers to address underlying sleep problems and discuss appropriate treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I).
