Medicare Cuts: Millions Face Healthcare Uncertainty

Millions of older Americans are facing uncertainty as Medicare undergoes significant changes, particularly concerning telehealth services. The current flexibilities, largely a remnant of the COVID-19 pandemic, are scheduled to end on January 30, 2026. This expiration will affect how 66 million seniors access healthcare.

After the January deadline, Medicare will cease covering many telehealth services broadly. While some limited exceptions may exist, beneficiaries could be required to be in medical facilities or rural areas for remote consultations. Services from audiologists and therapists will also be discontinued under telehealth.

These upcoming changes are expected to disproportionately impact seniors, especially those in rural locations, who may need to travel further for appointments. The potential increase in mandatory in-person visits and the removal of convenient home-based care options raise concerns about accessibility and financial burdens.
