Medicare's New $50 GLP-1 Drug Plan Launching Soon
22 Jun
Summary
- Medicare beneficiaries can access GLP-1s for $50 monthly.
- Program runs July 1, 2026, to December 31, 2027.
- Strict eligibility criteria apply, including BMI and medical conditions.

Starting July 1, 2026, a new Medicare program will offer eligible beneficiaries access to specific GLP-1 medications for a $50 monthly copay. This initiative, known as the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, is a time-limited demonstration scheduled to conclude on December 31, 2027.
The program is designed for beneficiaries seeking weight management solutions, as Medicare is prohibited from covering weight loss medications under its standard Part D benefit. To participate, beneficiaries must enroll in an eligible Part D plan and meet stringent health criteria, including a minimum BMI of 27 and specific diagnoses like prediabetes or certain heart conditions.
Providers must submit a prior authorization request and prescription for covered medications such as Wegovy, Zepbound, and Foundayo. The prior authorization process requires physicians to attest that patients do not have conditions like Type 2 diabetes or obstructive sleep apnea. The $50 copay does not contribute to deductibles or out-of-pocket maximums.
While lauded by obesity advocacy groups, the program has raised questions regarding its administration and cost, with official cost estimates yet to be released by CMS. Regulatory observers also note potential risks of fraud or misuse, though CMS emphasizes a checks-and-balances system involving provider and pharmacy coordination.
