Medical tourism is expanding beyond cosmetic procedures, with a growing number of Americans seeking routine healthcare and comprehensive screenings abroad. South Korea has become a major hub for this trend, welcoming 2.01 million foreign patients in 2025, a notable 71.7% rise from the previous year. Many patients, like Liping Chao, are drawn to the country's reputation for beauty and healthcare.

Chao's experience highlights the appeal of South Korea's medical services. His three-hour screening, including bloodwork, X-rays, and an endoscopy, cost approximately $320. This is considerably less than comparable procedures in the United States, where similar screenings can range from $500 to $1,500 or more. Heather Barlow also noted significant cost savings for health panels in Korea compared to Hong Kong.
