Medical Negligence: Forceps Left Inside Patient for Years
22 Feb
Summary
- Artery forceps left inside patient's abdomen for five years.
- Patient endured multiple protests to receive compensation.
- Police filed charge sheet, but action against doctors is pending.

A patient, Harsheena, has highlighted ongoing issues regarding medical negligence, stating her case involving an artery forceps left inside her abdomen for five years has not been adequately resolved. The forceps were discovered in 2022, years after her 2017 caesarean section at Kozhikode Medical College. Harsheena reported that the Health Department initially failed to acknowledge the doctors' lapse.
She initiated protests in February 2023, leading to a police complaint in March 2023. Harsheena asserts that only after her complaint was a case registered and an investigation commenced, despite the Health Minister's claims of providing reports. Compensation of ₹2 lakh was eventually granted after she announced fresh protests.
Harsheena expressed disappointment with the compensation amount and alleged that no action has been taken against the responsible medical staff. She criticized the Health Minister's response and stated that actions were only taken due to public protests and police intervention, not proactive measures by the department. She continues her fight for justice until the culprits are punished.
