Medical Marijuana: No Sleep Aid, Study Finds
13 Oct
Summary
- Medical cannabis shows little benefit for sleep quality.
- Studies are too small and short for firm conclusions.
- Potential side effects include dizziness and dry mouth.
A recent review of medical marijuana for insomnia suggests it provides minimal to no benefit in improving sleep quality or total sleep time. Researchers examined nine clinical trials involving 537 adults diagnosed with insomnia.
Compared to placebo, cannabis did not significantly enhance sleep quality, duration, or daytime functioning. However, it may increase the risk of side effects such as dizziness and dry mouth.
Lead author Dr. Lucia Varela highlighted that the evidence is too uncertain to definitively conclude on the effectiveness of medical cannabis for insomnia. Senior author Luis Garegnani noted that most existing studies were small and short-term, using varied cannabis products.
Larger, more extensive research is necessary to establish whether medical cannabis is a safe and effective treatment for insomnia. Clinicians and patients are advised to acknowledge the current data uncertainty and consider individual factors until stronger evidence emerges.
