17 Dec
Summary
- Measles outbreak caused 41% surge in school absences in West Texas.
- Absences were 10 times higher than confirmed measles cases.
- Young children experienced a 71% increase in absences due to exposure.

A recent measles outbreak in West Texas has resulted in a significant surge in school absenteeism, with absences increasing by 41% across all grade levels in the affected Seminole Independent School District. This preliminary study indicates that the rise in absences was approximately ten times greater than what would be expected solely from the confirmed measles cases, suggesting widespread caution among families and stricter health protocols.
The study reveals that younger students, particularly those in preschool through first grade, experienced the most pronounced spike in absences, registering a 71% increase. Public health recommendations mandate that unvaccinated or vulnerable students be excluded from school for up to 21 days following exposure to measles, contributing to the elevated rates of missed instruction.
