Measles Alert: Philly Airport Exposure Last Weekend

Health authorities are alerting the public to a potential measles exposure at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). The incident took place in Terminals B and F and connecting areas between September 13th and 14th. The individual with measles did not leave the airport premises, and this case is not linked to the one at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Those who were at PHL during the specified dates are advised to verify their measles immunity and vaccination status. Health Commissioner Dr. Palak Raval-Nelson emphasized the importance of staying current with vaccinations to protect oneself and the community, particularly vulnerable individuals, from ongoing outbreaks.

Measles, a highly contagious virus spread through respiratory droplets, can linger in the air for hours. The most effective protection is the two-dose measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Adults can also receive this vaccination if needed. Individuals experiencing symptoms after potential exposure should contact their doctor and local health department immediately.

This alert comes as Pennsylvania is experiencing a measles outbreak, with significant case numbers and associated deaths reported. Health officials stress that widespread vaccination is key to controlling the spread of the virus.
