Summary
- Measles spreads faster than common cold, posing serious health risks.
- Initial symptoms include cold-like signs and a distinctive rash.
- Vaccination is key to protection; MMRV or MMR vaccine prevents illness.

Health authorities have issued a warning regarding measles, an illness known to spread significantly faster and be more severe than the common cold. This highly contagious disease presents initial symptoms that can be mistaken for common cold ailments, such as a runny nose, high temperature, cough, sneezing, and red, watery eyes.
A characteristic rash usually follows these initial signs, typically beginning on the face and behind the ears before spreading across the body. This rash may appear as red or brown blotchy patches, which are not typically itchy. Identifying the rash can be more challenging on darker skin tones.
Individuals who have received both doses of the MMRV or MMR vaccine, or have previously had measles, are unlikely to contract the illness. However, if symptoms arise, prompt medical attention is advised. It is recommended to call a GP surgery before attending, as they may offer a telephone consultation or arrange for isolation to prevent further spread.
