Timing Is Everything: Eat Smarter for Longer Life
27 Jun
Summary
- Eating within a set daily window improves healthspan in mice.
- Timed feeding enhances health without calorie restriction.
- Meal timing is a promising strategy for healthy aging.

New research indicates that when you eat could be as important for healthy aging as what you eat. A study involving mice, published in Nature Aging, demonstrated that restricting food intake to a consistent daily eating window significantly improved healthspan.
Unlike calorie restriction, the mice were allowed to eat freely within an eight- or 12-hour period. This time-restricted feeding led to slower body fat gain, reduced frailty, and delayed onset of age-related diseases. Male mice with an eight-hour eating window also experienced a notable increase in lifespan.
Researchers suggest that aligning meal times with the body's natural circadian rhythm could be a key strategy for improving healthy aging in mammals. This approach shows promise for enhancing healthspan without the need for drastic calorie cuts, though further human trials are needed to confirm these benefits in people.
