Women Forced Into Procedures: Maternity Coercion Exposed
17 Mar
Summary
- Women report feeling pressured into medical procedures during maternity care.
- Caregivers used authoritative language, undermining informed decision-making.
- Black and Brown women disproportionately affected by rights violations.

A recent report from the charity Birthrights has highlighted a systemic problem of coercive practices within maternity services across England. The charity collated experiences from 300 individuals who reported feeling or witnessing pressure to undergo medical procedures during childbirth. This included being told they were 'not allowed' certain birth options or threatened with referrals to children's services.
Caregivers reportedly used authoritative language, which undermined women's ability to make truly informed decisions about their care. Specific examples shared involved women being pressured into vaginal examinations or inductions without adequate explanation. One woman recounted a doctor stating she would have a C-section regardless of her preference, demonstrating a stark lack of choice.
The report emphasizes that Black and Brown women and birthing people are experiencing the most severe attacks on their human rights, bodily autonomy, and choice. This situation breaches guidelines from the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the legal requirement for clinicians to support informed decision-making. Organizations like the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists acknowledge the issue but point to extreme pressure on services as a barrier to providing sensitive, informed care.
