States Revive Mask Mandates Amidst Illness Surges

Nationwide surges in illnesses like whooping cough, norovirus, and COVID-19 have prompted several states to reintroduce mask mandates. Oregon has reported a record number of whooping cough cases, and norovirus cases are unusually high for this time of year. COVID-19 cases are also on the rise, particularly in 17 states.

In response, New Jersey health providers and California counties have issued their own mask requirements. New York's state health department has mandated masks for unvaccinated healthcare workers. These measures aim to curb the transmission of severe respiratory illnesses, hospitalizations, and potential deaths, especially among vulnerable populations.

While masks are acknowledged as an effective tool when used properly, experts also highlight the importance of improving indoor air quality as a key public health strategy. This approach, similar to ensuring clean water, could significantly reduce the spread of illnesses, moving beyond reliance solely on mask-wearing and behavioral changes.
